IRUS Institute

About the Institute

Advancing what we know about the human mind — beginning with your own

Consciousness is your inner life — the felt experience of being you. And yet most of us move through the world somewhat unknown to ourselves.

Carl Jung observed that until we make the unconscious conscious, it will direct our lives and we will call it fate. Through self-examination, we can free ourselves from that fate.

IRUS Institute is a nonprofit whose purpose is to help each person come to know their own mind, and in the process, deepen humanity’s insight into what it means to be human.

The Mission

To expand individual awareness and evolve our collective understanding of consciousness.

The Vision

A world where we are free to live beyond the limits of our own minds.

Dr. Amber Amendola, founder of IRUS Institute

Amber Amendola, PhD, is the founder of IRUS Institute and the creator of the IRUS framework. Her work exploring consciousness sits at the intersection of Western psychology, Eastern philosophy, and emerging neuroscience.

Educated at Barnard College of Columbia University in Human Rights, she began her career working with organizations including UNAIDS and Doctors Without Borders, where she developed an early interest in the relationship between individual healing and collective transformation.

She completed a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Premedical Studies at Harvard University and conducted clinical research at Methodist Hospital in Houston and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York before matriculating in the MD program at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. After her first year, she transitioned away from traditional medicine, turning instead toward more integrative and psychological approaches to healing.

Amber holds a Master's degree in Integral Counseling Psychology and a PhD in Integral Transpersonal Psychology from the California Institute of Integral Studies. Her doctoral research examined the relationship between altered states of consciousness and self-concept clarity, and identified self-other congruence — the alignment between how we see ourselves and how others see us — as a measurable indicator of psychological integration.

For over a decade, she has worked with individuals and groups in the integration of psychological insight, somatic awareness, and contemplative practice. She maintained a private psychotherapy practice in Los Angeles, where she completed her clinical practicum in addiction recovery, and has served as a Learning Mentor for The Synthesis Institute's psychedelic practitioner training. In addition to her clinical work, Amber has trained as a meditation teacher, a yoga teacher, and a breathwork facilitator.

The IRUS framework is the synthesis of this work. What she spent years developing for her clients and for herself, she now offers through the IRUS Process: a twelve-week journey to see yourself clearly and live in closer alignment with who you want to be.
